Christopher Nolan's atomic bomb biopic "Oppenheimer" cemented itself as an awards-season powerhouse Tuesday morning, scoring 13 nominations for the 96th Academy Awards.
"Oppenheimer" is up for best picture as well as best actor (Cillian Murphy), supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.) and supporting actress (Emily Blunt) at this year's Oscars ceremony (airing live at 7 p.m. EST/4 PT March 10 on ABC). The fantastical dark comedy "Poor Things" received 11 nods, announced Tuesday morning, while Martin Scorsese's Western crime epic "Killers of the Flower Moon" garnered 10.
Those three will be contending for Hollywood's biggest prize – best picture – with Greta Gerwig's pop-culture phenomenon "Barbie," the 1970s holiday throwback "The Holdovers," romantic drama "Past Lives," racial satire "American Fiction," the Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro," French courtroom thriller "Anatomy of a Fall" and Holocaust drama "The Zone of Interest."
This year's best picture lineup is noteworthy for being the first time there are three movies directed by women – Gerwig, Justine Triet ("Anatomy of a Fall") and Celine Song ("Past Lives") – though only Triet earned a best director nomination.
Lily Gladstone, breakout star of "Killers of the Flower Moon," made history as the first Native American nominated for best actress. Fellow Globe winner Emma Stone ("Poor Things") is also in the category, as are Carey Mulligan ("Maestro"), Sandra Hüller ("Anatomy of a Fall") and Annette Bening ("Nyad").
The best actor contingent includes Paul Giamatti ("The Holdovers"), Bradley Cooper ("Maestro") and first-time nominees Murphy, Colman Domingo ("Rustin") and Jeffrey Wright ("American Fiction").
After key wins, Downey looks poised to take the best supporting actor trophy but first, he'll have to tussle with Ryan Gosling ("Barbie"), Robert De Niro ("Killers of the Flower Moon"), Sterling K. Brown ("American Fiction") and Mark Ruffalo ("Poor Things").
Da'Vine Joy Randolph ("The Holdovers") leads the supporting actress category, which includes Blunt, Danielle Brooks ("The Color Purple"), Jodie Foster ("Nyad") and America Ferrera ("Barbie").
